A few core things. Adjustable seat height, real lumbar support, and a backrest that follows the natural curve of your spine do most of the work. Adjustable armrests and seat depth are the finishing touches that dial in the fit for different body types.

Start from your feet. Set the seat so your feet rest flat on the floor with your knees around 90 degrees, and your forearms sit parallel to the desk when you type. If the desk is too high to manage that, raise the chair and add a footrest.

They are made to belong in a home. Instead of the usual cubicle look, these use residential-grade upholstery in fabric or leather, premium foam, and frames that sit comfortably alongside your bedroom or living room furniture.

Not as long as you might think. Get up and move for 5 to 10 minutes out of every 45 to 60 minutes, since even the best ergonomic chair cannot undo the effects of sitting for hours. Alternating between sitting and standing is ideal.

For a warm climate, mesh has the edge. It lets air move and stays cooler through a long stretch of work, which counts in Hawaii's warmth and humidity. An upholstered back trades some of that airflow for a softer, more cushioned feel and a cleaner look.

The hard plastic ones can. They scratch wood and mark tile over time, so swapping them for soft rubber or polyurethane casters solves it, or a chair mat under the desk protects the floor just as well.

It depends on the material. Vacuum fabric monthly to lift out dust and hair, and spot-clean stains with a damp cloth and mild soap. For leather, a soft, damp wipe plus conditioner every 6 to 12 months keeps it from drying out and cracking.
