Length is what matters. A rectangular table at least 72 inches long, about 6 feet, seats six comfortably with standard chairs. A round table 54 to 60 inches across also seats six, though it eats up a bit more width in the room.

Round tables tend to win in tight rooms. With no corners, they let people squeeze in and move around freely. Rectangular tables use space more efficiently against a wall. And for a really small dining area, a square table for four is often the most practical call.

Give yourself room to get up. Ideally, leave 36 inches between the table edge and any wall or furniture so chairs pull out and someone can walk behind them. In a pinch, 24 inches lets chairs slide out, but walking behind gets awkward.

Long and narrow usually fits best. Many Honolulu condos open the dining area right into the kitchen, so a rectangular or oval table set parallel to the counter uses the floor efficiently and keeps the path between kitchen and living area clear.
